Chinese Mothers

Due to the nature of my work, I usually deal with companies and people who work in them, thus managing to avoid the insanity that comes with dealing with individuals and their family members.

There are a couple of exceptions to this rule, but after today, maybe I will make some exceptions to my exceptions. Am handing a matter now for a doctor regarding his late father's property, and I wrote him yesterday to ask for a number of documents. He called today, we chatted about them, then he asked me as a favour to call his mother to ask for 3 documents. I understand this sort of request because, look, he's busy, I'm supposed to help him with his personal matters, so I'll spend 3 minutes on the phone doing it.

I call his mother, and she sounds (a) surprisingly alert and very healthy; and (b) surprisingly pissed off. Like "Satan on a bad day" pissed off. She says "okay I'll get the documents" through what sounds remarkably like clenched teeth, and then (just like my mother) hangs up without saying goodbye. I even wondered for a moment if I had called my mother by mistake.

10 minutes later, she calls me back, and now she sounds completely enraged. YOU TELL MY SON THAT IF HE WANTS ANY DOCUMENTS HE CAN CALL ME HIMSELF OTHERWISE I AM NOT GIVING YOU ANYTHING *CLICK*

Good grief.

I called him and as I told him what happened, I had this sneaking suspicion that I really didn't need to explain very much. He just sighed, said he'll call her, and then hung up. Five minutes later, he called again to ask me to write to her as she was not taking his calls.

Jesus.

She's just like my mother.

Chinese, American, German, Thai, whatever...I don't think it matters. There's a reason I live 1500 miles away from my mother. At least when I lived in Singapore I knew she couldn't just pop by to make my life hell.

sounds like MY mother. who still becomes furious when i go out without telling her where to and when i forget to tell her that i'm not going to be home for dinner.

now, are you ever afraid that you'll eventually become like your mother? =x

Sounds like my mother too. She LOVES to hang up on me, without saying bye of course (too much to ask of her, it seems).

So sometimes, it gets humiliating when I have to let my sentence drift off in thin air, and explain to friends that my mother just hung up on me. =_="

The hanging up without saying goodbye part sounds like my mother as well. Except she'd pull out her "Emotionally Blackmail Your Children So They'll Feel Bad" card before doing so.

when my mother does the hanging-up-on-me thing and i'm with my friends, i usually append something like 'okay. bye' to the end of the conversation. hurhur.

I could think of a couple of reasons why she would react this way:

- she doesn't trust you to hand over the documents.

- she had a pretty bad relationship with the son ( which pretty much explains why she is refusing to pick up his call)

I thought it is kind of sad if a son had to get someone else to call his mum just to convey a message. Is work really more important then family? I could hardly blame the Mum for being pissed off.

Seriously I doubt this has anything to do with the race of the mother, and everything to do with the relationship between the mother and the son.

That is incredibly racist (for the lack of a better word). I love your blogs - and identify with some, being in the same industry - but honestly this entry is a sweeping statement, and a very unfair one. aren't you a chinese mother?

Oh yes, I am a Chinese mother and I also have a Chinese mother of my own, therefore I speak from an overflowing wellspring of experience.

As time passes, I can feel the stirring in my DNA to behave in exactly the same way towards The Son.
