Something Terrible This Way Comes

I think the Terrible Twos have started, and we are not even 1.5 yet! The Son throws the most elaborate tantrums now, some of them for no particular reason, and there is really no end to the constant head shaking (accompanied by whole body shaking). Do you want milk? No. Do you want food? No. Do you want to play with Mama? No no no no.

This morning, the door stopper could not be removed from the wall (it's screwed down) and some people threw a blind fit, with the crying and the falling down whilst crying, and the smacking of the bad door stopper, and the increased volume of crying. I read my paper and drank the coffee until he realised there was no attention being paid and then he comes charging over and pulls the paper away to cry for an audience. This is why I am about 60% news-free today. Never got beyond the Natsteel proxy fight, or whatever that was.

Then the Preferred Parent came into the room and there were rainbows and smiles and people were laughing and playing and behaving like good little boys. I felt like there was a little sign above my head, like a detergent label, that said "Mama - Now with 50% less fun".

In other news, his pre-molars have arrived but we still cannot get him to brush his teeth. This is not good.

I suppose you did all the dirty work to become the less-preferred parent.

Look on the bright side. At least R listens to one of you. Imagine if neither of you could control him.

But I do feel your frustration!

I feel bad that despite all the tantrum-throwing, your story is still inexplicably cute.

you are in fact the PREFERRED parent and that's why you get them tantrums thrown at you! you probably do no disciplining and hence he wants your attention more when you're in town. poor baby....give him more lah.

Good grief woman. I barely take off my shoes at the front door before I pick him up. There have been occasions of extreme neediness when I bathe whilst carrying him which results in a state of hygiene I'd rather not talk about. Not to mention the egg and milo stains on my brand new designer tee shirt which Dorothy (fodder for a new post) sold to me.

I am not the preferred parent. We perform different functions in his life is all. I help him to reach high things. You are supposed to feel his pain.

And I would just like to state for the record that I have done very much my fair share of the dirty work -- diapers, feedings at three a.m. in the other room so mommy could get her sleep etc.

An ongoing commentary of parental woes! Parental angst! Parental defensiveness!

just in case I am misunderstood. When I say 'dirty work', I mean disciplining. It is just a peception from my own experience that the mother usually set more ground rules and draw the boundaries, while the father plays with the kid and have a good time of bonding together. Only in extreme cases, daddy will step in to become the disciplinarian. Fathers tend to be more agreeable while mothers mostly are the ones to say no to this and that. I could be very wrong but just my perception when I read it.

oh palmist dearest. you have not met this mommy, have you? or perhaps you do not know her well enuff. this mommy does not discipline. her discipline's her career. this daddy's the real deal. hard to come by. so, HairyD, eat up quickly and give the dad some breathing space won't ya? he needs the break after all that caregiving.

also, I can't believe you had to talk about dorothy. my god. I refuse. you're so evil. she's so evil. dun you ever talk about her again.

A daddy who does the night feeds is hard to come by. I have been doing all the night feeds for the past 15 months - no doubt it is straight from the tap, but even if it had been from the bottle, I doubt it would have been any different.

Have not had a single night of uninterrupted sleep since Z...

But it is all worth it. :)

Has anyone ever heard of a human being without teeth?

Cos Z still has none...

I don't own a baby (!) nor am I married but your writings crack me up. Just dropping a note so that I can stop being a lurker.

Hi Ene! Thanks for reading!!

Minx: You mean no teeth at all!??! In a way it is good because you don't have drool on the floor and furniture. Am quite surprised. But if the paed says it's okay, then it's okay.

At 3:56 AM, Blogger gremlin said...

all that calcium from the tap gone to all that hair....the luxury of not being bitten - why worry?

At 8:28 AM, Blogger Minx said...

Er... paed doesn't know. Have not seen paed for long time. Figured that paed can't do much to cause the teeth to come out so we should just wait...

At 11:32 AM, Blogger HairyDonut said...

Eh! I thought I was the only defaulter. Son has not been to the paed since his third month or some other ridiculous date. He gets his jabs from my mom.

It's just too much trouble to take half day off every single time I have to bring him to the paediatrician, not to mention the astronomical charges, the waiting room stress and the ever-present risk of him catching a disease from some sick kid who actually really needs to see a doctor.
