How to Survive a 24-Hour Plane Ride With A Toddler
a. portable DVD-player with a stack of High-Five CDs (1 hour)
b. lots of toddler books and 5 pacifiers (1 hour, tops)
c. subcontract the job to the junior stewardess (5 mins)
d. strong medication for the parent(s), accompanied by a stiff drink or ten (depends on the medication)
e. parents to develop selective seeing and hearing abilities (so as not to see or hear the other passengers who have been adversely affected by said toddler's activities) (1 min)
f. lock self and toddler in the loo and let him play with all the dispensables (10 mins)
g. allow toddler to run around the plane without supervision (2 mins before he gets returned by a stewardess or passenger)
Oh God. What are we in for.

Indy, that was my option (h) (strong medication and a stiff drink for the toddler), but I figure that was a thought best kept to myself.
Minx, that's genius. GENIUS. I was going to wait till just before the trip to buy the portable DVD player but what the hell I'm buying it now.
Seriously, you can actually safely administer some cough/cold medication. Just let your GP know. They'd understand and give you the right prescription.
I am not a parent but at a gathering once, I witnessed an adult (who wasn't the child's parent - he just loved his dvd player) whipped out his dvd player and proceeded to play Finding Nemo on it.
*Every* kid below the age of 12 years old was magically attracted to it and they all sat very still (and quietly) while watching it, leaving the adults to partake in non-intrusive conversation.
Portable dvd players are the way to go.

this is real tricky situtation.
when i was flying to japan, i almost murdered the noisy kid on board. she was restless and cried through out 8 hours.
the moment i look at her parents face, i soften. they were helpless and they themselves wished that they could rest too.
sigh...
drugging them is the way to go. else drug yourself and hope someone else (aka husband) will take charge. else drug husband and allow kid to play all over him (anything goes kinda play) - not pretty but an idea.
